To turn and grind on the same machine

We already presented this new Schaublin machine on these pages (and you will be able to discover more in Eurotec’s next issue). Nevertheless I was able to take a few pictures yesterday… Enjoy.

The new 202TG was presented at the Schaublin inauguration of its new building on June 21 and Rolf Muster, CEO tells us: “We are very confident for the future with this new machine, the first was sold on June 20 to a Malaysian company and a few more are being negotiated. It’s very positive for a machine that has not been officially launched”. This customer is active in the automotive industry but the machine is dedicated to all fields of activity..

Basically the kinematics of the machine is simple, it includes a synchronous motorspindle (up to 7’000 rpm, 30 Nm) with a W25 nose and possible use of a bar loader (19 mm max.). Two cross-slides receive the different tooling on both sides and the tailstock as well as the part catcher are mounted on a gantry.

Machines and know-how close to you

For the fifth year DMG/Mori Seiki is organising one-day technology seminars on the subject of innovative machining topics within the scope of roadshows. The presentations consists of an integrated combination of theory and practice, ranging from milling and turning to the ever-expanding aerospace industry and machine-related workshops.

 In 2013 the machine tool manufacturer is visiting Europe, Asia and (for the first time) USA.

The Roadshows are rounded off by live demonstrations on the machinery, and also specialist talks from a wide range of competence partners. The benefits to the visitors are obvious. They can find out about the latest state of technology in a single day.

Milling and turning roadshow
Complete machining using milling and turning technology established itself as one of the most productive forms of machining a long time ago. Whereas live demonstrations on a DMU 65 FD monoBLOCK® show reduced machining times, products that perform key functions in milling and turning machining are introduced by competence partners in specialist talks. Three dates still remain in the schedule, the event locations are Ohio and South Windsor in Connecticut followed by Los Angeles.

NLX Roadshow
The machine-related NLX roadshow is all about complete machining using cutting technology. The core issue here is an NLX2500, which is a trendsetter in the cutting area thanks to its main spindle and counter spindle, Y-axis and integrated drive motor. The NLX Roadshow started in May in Geretsried and Hamburg. The next stops are in Bielefeld, Planá nad Lužnicí (CZ), Neukirchen and Wernau.

eVo Roadshow
The eVo Roadshow is all about dynamic 5-axis machining on a DMU 40 eVo linear. Visitors can convince themselves of the performance capability of the swivel rotary table and the linear drives on site. Next stops: Guandong, Taiwan, Boston and Los Angeles.

CTX & SPRINT Roadshow
Visitors to the CTX & SPRINT Roadshow can familiarise with the latest generation of productive lathes at a two-day event. On day one the main focus is on a CTX beta 800 4A with integrated handling. A SPRINT 50-3T is the highlight of day two of the roadshow. With three Revolvers and a B-axis with torque drive, it also provides productive complete machining – 6-sided and with negative angles. The next dates are from October to December in Yekaterinburg, St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Aerospace Roadshow
One of the biggest challenges in aerospace technology is the machining of demanding materials such as titanium. The Aerospace Roadshow shows how users can meet these demands in the best possible way on the example of a DMU 85 FD monoBLOCK® and a NLX4000AY. Next places will be Poland, Northern Germany and France from October onwards.

Delcam’s new PowerSHAPE offers extra “design for manufacture” functions

The 2014 release of Delcam’s PowerSHAPE CAD software offers a range of new functionality for the conversion of product designs into tooling designs.  The software now provides an even more powerful set of easy-to-use tools to increase productivity through increased automation and improved workflow.

By offering a combination of modelling and reverse engineering functionality, PowerSHAPE provides the most comprehensive range of design techniques available in a single CAD program.  Having all the different technologies in the same package reduces the need to transfer data between multiple programs and so streamlines the whole product development process.

Smart Feature Manager
The Solid Doctor in PowerSHAPE has offered quick and easy repair of imported data from other CAD systems for many years.  For the 2014 release, these capabilities have been enhanced with the addition of the Smart Feature Manager.  PowerSHAPE can already recognise a variety of solid features within imported “dumb” geometry, such as fillets, slots, bosses etc.  The Smart Feature Manager allows users to identify all these features within a solid in a single operation and so makes the analysis of the imported data easier and faster.

To the help of tool designers
One common problem for tooling designers is finding fillets that are too small for successful filling of the mould.  The Smart Feature Manager can be used to identify all the fillets having radii less than a particular size so that they can be modified to more suitable values.
Another common requirement for tooling design is adding draft surfaces and split surfaces to the model. These modifications and similar repetitive tasks have been made simpler through the addition of “Apply” buttons to all the surface-creation dialogs that allow multiple operations or operations on multiple surfaces without leaving the form.  Clicking the right mouse button has the same effect as pressing “Apply”, which further speeds up repetitive operations.

Many improvements
The new version of PowerSHAPE includes many novelties and improvements, for instance:

  • The core/cavity separation wizard has been rewritten to make it even faster and more effective
  • Any ambiguous faces can be assigned to the appropriate side. If required, individual faces can be split and then attached to the correct part of the tool.
  • Throughout the process, clear graphical feedback, including undercut shading, highlights any potential moulding issues arising from the design.
  • New “solid extrusion” tool that allows solids to be created from multiple nested curves in a single operation.

Hard materials high speed machining: a wish comes true

What had long been regarded as impossible has become reality: ultra-hard materials can be machined by high speed milling. It is a kind of mini-revolution that begins in the construction of moulds, tools and components for advanced applications. To be profitable, this process should however be reserved for very specific fabrications.

By “ultra-hard materials” we mean sintered carbide based metals (hard metals) and ceramics. These two types of materials are composites, which are distinguished by their extreme hardness, their high resistance to wear and in part by their ability of resistance to chemical processes. They also have in common the need to be machined to obtain the desired shape. Till today the procedures used had been grinding, polishing and EDM.

Winning combination…
What then of high speed milling of hard metals? So far, users were not perfectly able to use that technology. Materials with hardness exceeding 90 HRC are extremely damaging both to cutters and spindles. “We believe that the optimal combination is the joint use of a suitable Kern milling machine equipped with special tools , appropriate hard metal and an adapted milling strategy”, says Martin Bräm, director of the company of the same name (Switzerland).

Exciting results
The parts ordered have been machined in a fine-grained hard metal, consisting in 91% of tungsten carbide with a hardness of 91.5 HRC. The tools were equipped with a new type of diamond coating and were chosen for their longevity. “Resistance of the coating was astounding: it held, held and still held. Even our milling specialists did not believe in it. Once the first envelope worn out, the tool was long time stable” says Mr. Bräm. The director adds: “We’ve also made tests of high speed machining in ceramics and the results exceed our expectations too”.

For Martin Bräm, the goal is now to convince most users of hard metal of the possibilities of this process.

For all markets
The company aims in priority manufacturers of tools, moulds and dies for stamping, but all sectors can benefit from this advanced technology, for example in the realization of cutting tools, machining of forged parts or realization of watch cases in ultra-hard materials.

Swiss champion of productivity and precision

Yesterday Schaublin Machines inaugurated its new building with the presence of Didier Cuche, the Swiss ski champion, authorities, customers from all around the world, agents, partners, employees and Schaublin supporters. Today the celebration continues for the general public and employees.

The event was the occasion to unveil the new 202 TG turning/grinding machine… and also to celebrate the first machine sold to a Malaysian company (and a few more orders are expected within a few days). M. Muster CEO is very confident regarding this new machine (see the first technical info here).

When precision and willingness to be the first meet
If Schaublin invited the Swiss champion it is for good reasons, it is somewhere for the same values that they are fighting: the need to be very accurate and also the absolute necessity to aim to be the best. But that’s not all; they are booth committed for the training of youth and the promotion of the region.

To turn and grind with a single machine

On the occasion of the inauguration of its new plant in Bévilard (today, June 21), Schaublin Machines is going to unveil a combined machine (turning and grinding) dedicated to microtechnology. This novelty will then be presented at EMO.

The machining zone has been specially designed to be resistant to the abrasive powders (grinding) and chips (turning and milling). It is modular and allows different types of configuration, for example:

  • Turning/milling machine with tooling of a 102 lathe and a turret
  • Grinding machine with 4 grinding spindles (internal and/or external)
  • Combined machine with a turret and grinding spindles

Adapted peripherals
The design allows flexible programming and use and makes the machine adapted to small series, but simultaneously, high productivity and robustness of the machine also means it for large volumes of production and automation. Many peripherals are developed according to the needs of machining (tanks, conveyors and pumps adapted to the three alternatives presented above). Use can largely be automated by the addition of loading and unloading systems as well as a bar loader (max diameter: 19 mm).
