New communication and programming software

At EMO 2013 Tornos will unveil new programming software for its machines operating without assistance from TB-DECO. Already used by those who bought the first SwissNano machines, the new software, called ISIS, is much more than just an ISO editor with a pleasing design.

The new software package also enables direct communication with machines and allows their status to be monitored. We met with Patrick Neuenschwander, software development manager at Tornos, to find out more.

ISO code easily managed
ISIS is a programming system intended for machines controlled via an ISO editor, in particular SwissNano and Swiss ST 26 machines. It differs from TB-Deco, which is a horizontal editor. This editor, which can manage up to 3 channels, can display the ISO code vertically. The ISO code is automatically synchronised between the channels, and syntax highlighting is used to ensure easy identification of the various value codes.

Simple monitoring of machines
At present it is possible to monitor the following machine models: EvoDeco 10, EvoDeco 16, EvoDeco 20/32, Swiss ST, MultiSwiss, Almac VA 1008, SwissNano, MultiAlpha, MultiSigma.
ISIS enables detailed monitoring of the machine inventory, and monitoring can also be performed via the Tornos Android application which was first integrated on the SwissNano. The functions are identical on both applications, but ISIS also offers advanced filtering options currently not available on the Android application. For example, machines can be filtered according to their status. Monitoring includes not only the status of the machines in the workshop, but also an overview of current production: the workpiece counter, remaining production time and the name and drawing of the workpiece are available at any time.

Rapid tool change due to the Chiron ToolTower

At EMO, Chiron will present the new Chiron ToolTower. Its enables higher productivity due to shorter set-up times by allowing rapid changing of up to 210 tools. (See also the news about the Chiron baseline at EMO here.)

The tools are thus provided within the shortest possible time during machining and with minimal space requirements. The magazine is available in configuration levels with places for 130, 170 or 210 tools. The space requirements are minimal and the same for all configuration levels. At EMO this new too changer will be shown on a brand new solution, the new 24 series.

The new 24 series machines with a large spindle clearance
The new models provide spacious work areas with the dimensions X 830 mm / Y 630 mm / Z 630 mm, and, along with highest precision, especially high cutting performance. For powerful machining, there are spindle drives with torques of up to 300 Nm. The new models of the 24 series are available either with one or two spindles with a clearance of 400 mm or 600 mm, with fixed tables or workpiece changing tables. The large door opening as well as the barrier-free access to the work area allow easy loading and unloading of workpieces and devices, for instance with a crane. In addition to its great performance, it is also characterized by even greater speed: extremely rapid feeds and acceleration rates as well as chip-to-chip times of 2.9 seconds ensure highly dynamic production.

ToolTowers
For a quick change during machining, different configuration levels of Chiron ToolTowers with up to 210 places are available and can also be seen at the EMO. Chiron rotary axes are based on crash-safe as well as backlash-free cycloid and torque drive technology with direct angle measuring systems. These ensure highly accurate, efficient multi-sided machining. The machining centers are designed in an especially compact way. Additional aggregates are integrated in the Chiron FluidTower to save space. The chip conveyor can be mounted behind or on the side, depending on the spatial situation.

New multi-axis PartMaker module at EMO

Delcam will demonstrate improved multi-axis machining options in the latest version of its PartMaker suite of CAM software on stand K18 in Hall 25, the largest stand of any CADCAM supplier, at the EMO exhibition.

The new four- and five-axis simultaneous milling functionality in PartMaker 2013 R2, known as ASM-MX, or Advanced Surface Machining – Multi-Axis, applies across the entire PartMaker CAM suite, including the PartMaker Mill, Turn-Mill and SwissCAM modules. In addition to providing unique four- and five-axis simultaneous milling functionality, ASM-MX has also been priced cost effectively relative to other CAM systems on the market for high-end milling.

Unique functionality
One the hallmarks of PartMaker ASM-MX, like other Delcam CAM systems such as PowerMILL, is that all the machining algorithms underlying the software are developed in-house, by Delcam’s industry-largest CAM development team, not licensed from a third party developer.  This approach assures PartMaker users that they are getting unique functionality that will allow them to stay ahead of the competition.

Five-axis simultaneous machining strategies
The new four- and five-axis simultaneous milling strategies found in ASM-MX are based on the same unique approach to multi-axis programming used in the PowerMILL CAM system for high-speed and five-axis machining.  ASM-MX provides the user with complete tool-axis control for all five-axis simultaneous machining strategies. Additionally, ASM-MX features a totally unique new machining strategy called “Spine Finishing.”  Spine finishing can be used in either four- or five-axis simultaneous operations and is ideal for machining parts with unique curves, such as angulated abutments found in the dental implant industry.

“The new functionality in PartMaker that will be on display at EMO lets users harness the power of highly sophisticated four- and five-axis simultaneous milling in an intuitive and practical, yet highly sophisticated and elegant manner,” claims PartMaker Division President, Hanan Fishman.  “Advanced surface machining practices are becoming more and more common in production machining environments.  This trend is growing in popularity particularly among those working in the medical and aerospace fields.”

BA1008 – SwissNano with milling capability

At EMO Almac will unveil a brand new small milling machine. On first sight, this tiny bar milling machine reveals its close kinship with the Tornos SwissNano. We do not know yet if the machine will be available in as many colours as the SwissNano.

Tornos Director Mr. Hauser tells us: “We unveiled the SwissNano to lots of customers from the watchmaking industry, and they all confirmed that this machine is a game-changer in terms of the market”. Mr. Devanthéry, Director of Almac, adds: “The compact size of the SwissNano is an undeniable advantage for watchmakers, and we wanted to make the most of these advantages on a bar milling machine”.

Ergonomic design
The frame of the BA 1008 bar milling machine is the same as that of the SwissNano. The upper section has been modified to integrate two multi-spindle tool systems, and complete accessibility is guaranteed using the same motorbike helmet opening principle as is employed on the SwissNano. For watchmakers, a wooden table has been added and other options are also in development. The Director explains: “We also want to produce a version of the machine on which the table acts as the operator’s main workbench”.

Multi-spindle productivity
Bars are fed into the BA1008 in the same way as on the Tornos version designed for turning, however the spindle cannot be used for turning operations. A divider system is used to load workpieces up to a diameter of 16 mm. Positioned machining operations and interpolation between the tool systems and the workpiece are easily possible. Equipped with 4 frontal spindles, 3 lateral spindles and 2 counter operation spindles, the machine has been designed for very precise workpieces.

Design and function in harmony

With the new TKA55 product concept, Tsubaki Kabelschlepp convinced the international jury of the iF design award 2013 and received an award in the product design category. Due to the highly impenetrable construction, the cable carriers provide reliable protection for cables in accordance with protection class IP54 against dirt, chips and spray water right up to the connection.

The innovative TKA55 cable carrier received the iF product design award 2013 for the new design concept: the completely enclosed construction effectively prevents the ingress of contaminating particles. Optimised sideband and cover contours also prevent the impairment of functions due to adhesion or penetration of chips and dirt. The interlocking covers fit tightly together and the smooth, dirt-repelling contour of the sidebands likewise prevents penetration by foreign objects.

Comprehensively tested
German TÜV NORD has tested and attested the impermeability of the TKA55 to IP54. IP54 attest includes protection against spray water and ingress of dust, as well as complete protection against contact. All products of the TKA series are also optionally available in extremely heat-resistant versions: a special material that withstands temperatures up to 850°C protects the cables reliably against the adverse effects of hot chips, for example.

The iF design awards are among the most important international design competitions. Since 1953 they are awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements in the three disciplines product design, communication design and packaging design.
