By combining high clamping force and optimized interference levels, KM4X™ by Kennametal provides a robust connection, extremely high stiffness, and bending load capacity for greatly improved performance in machining high-strength alloys and other materials.

The continuing development of high-strength, lightweight materials such as titanium alloys, Inconel, and new aluminium alloys are eagerly sought by manufacturers in many industries, including aerospace and defence, energy, and transportation. These new materials present significant machining challenges in themselves. Add the competitive pressures in these global industries, and finding advanced manufacturing solutions becomes a top priority.

The limits of machines
“In most cases, the tool-spindle connection determines how much material can be removed on a given operation,” says Doug Ewald, director, global product management, tooling systems at Kennametal. “This is because this interface must withstand high loads and yet maintain its rigidity. With the ongoing advances in cutting tools and machining centers, a spindle connection that makes the best utilization of available power possible is an important consideration to investigate early in production planning.” “This is a full-system partnership between companies,” says John Jacko, vice president and chief marketing officer at Kennametal. “With the KM4X spindle connection and Sumitomo Electric’s innovative technology, there is no reason why companies should hold back investigating high-torque, high-speed machining capabilities for both existing and new equipment. This means achieving the maximum potential of your machine tools.”

Delcam keeps Bloodhound SSC world record attempt on track

Delcam Professional Services has manufactured its first part for the Bloodhound SSC (Supersonic Car) adventure, making the company both an SME Sponsor and a Product Sponsor of the project. The component is part of the steering support column and so is essential in ensuring that the car remains on track during its world land-speed record attempt.

Delcam has manufactured its first component for Bloodhound SSC, part of the steering support column.
Delcam has manufactured its first component for Bloodhound SSC, part of the steering support column.

Bloodhound SSC aims to set a new record of 1000mph in South Africa in 2016.  Delcam is supporting the project with its manufacturing software and expertise, as well as producing components for the record-breaking vehicle in the Advanced Manufacturing Facility at its Birmingham headquarters.

A new way to machine
The steering support column was produced on Delcam’s Hermle C50 UMT machining centre, which offers five-axis machining through the incorporation of a trunion for the a axis and a rotary table to provide the c axis.  This provides an alternative approach to the DMG, Mazak and Huron five-axis equipment in the Advanced Manufacturing Facility (AMF), and so increases the ranges of processes that can be undertaken and components that can be produced.

Advanced Manufacturing Facility
As well as providing prototype machining capacity for companies whose own machines are fully occupied with production work, the equipment in the Advanced Manufacturing Facility helps Delcam’s clients to improve their manufacturing processes.  These process-development services are attracting increased demand, especially from the aerospace and power generation industries, as many companies now find that their engineering resource is needed to maintain their on-going operations, leaving them limited capacity to introduce new products or develop new processes.

The equipment is also used in testing new developments in Delcam’s software.  Being able to test developments on-site on industrial-sized equipment obviously gives Delcam a major advantage in proving out its programs before they are delivered to customers.

Shared knowledge
The manufacturing expertise gained from the AMF forms an important part of the comprehensive support given by Delcam to all its customers. As well as helping the development teams, the experience gained can be passed on to the support staff.  They can use this knowledge to give software users more detailed advice on all areas of their work, including aspects like the best choice of machining strategy and cutter selection, as well as the operation of the software.

Companies react positively to the Biemh

940 exhibiting companies have confirmed their participation of the Spanish show, encouraged by the good prospects for business.
biemh 2012_
The 28th International Machine-Tool Exhibition is to focus on large machines, advanced technologies and interesting prospects for doing business. As the sales campaign nears its end, the event’s claim of “Think Big, Think BIEMH” has shown itself to be perfectly in tune with the approach that companies in the sector are currently taking. A total of 940 exhibitors have already signed up for the event, to show the world their new products, based on innovations and high-level specialisation to give extra added value.

Wide range of industrial equipment
The exhibition areas devoted to cutting and forming machines and to tools and accessories will take centre stage once again, as they did in previous years, but the show will also feature other sectors and products such as electrical and electronic equipment, metrology and quality control, welding, flame cutting, robotics, workshop and business services and a section for “other machinery and equipment”. The final layouts of four exhibition halls have already been drawn up, with a total surface area of almost 70,000 m2.

Upward shared trend
As the market is moving in the right direction and the pace of the recovery gradually increases, registration for the event is going well, and the prospects for the last few months are good. With four months to go before the event, which is scheduled for 2-7 June, the figure for participation is around 12% up on the equivalent period prior to the previous edition.

Products from more than 30 countries
The chance to access wide-ranging international markets from a soundly consolidated trade-show and to take advantage of changing circumstances in Spanish internal demand are of the reasons why firms from over 30 countries have confirmed their attendance of the forthcoming BIEMH: Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey…

.
Biemh is going to take place at the BEC in Bilbao from June 2 to 7, 2014.

Grade GC3330 leads the way for cast iron milling

Sandvik Coromant takes cast iron milling to a new level on March 3rd when the insert grade GC3330 is introduced. Cast iron milling is the next machining area covered by the new grades with Inveio™ from Sandvik Coromant.

Sandvik_march2014

Having already introduced the game-changing grade GC4325 for steel turning, the innovative cutting tools supplier now introduces GC3330, a wear-resistant first choice grade for cast iron milling.

Increase machine utilization
With predictable performance becoming increasingly important in many machining processes, GC3330 is meeting the needs of today’s manufacturing. The consistent performance of GC3330 creates opportunities for manufacturers to increase machine utilization as well as removing a lot of metal in a short time without compromising tool life. Minimizing machining interruptions also enables secure unmanned machining.

Inveio – the innovation behind
GC3330 is equipped with Inveio, the latest innovation in material science. The groundbreaking technology uses uni-directional crystal orientation. While the crystal orientation in conventional inserts’ CVD alumina coating normally is random, GC3330 has controlled crystals lined up towards the top surface. This is the secret behind the endurance, predictability and long tool life of GC3330.

Application area
The new insert grade GC3330 is the first choice for both dry and wet cast iron milling, from roughing to finishing. Covering a broad application area, Sandvik Coromant’s new grade can be used in any cast iron milling operation for both grey and nodular cast iron materials. GC3330 is available for a variety of milling cutters for face-, shoulder-, profile-, high feed-, and parting and grooving milling.
