Renishaw announces new Solutions Centre partner and distributor for its additive manufacturing technology in China

Renishaw, a global manufacturer of metrology systems and metal 3D printing machines, is pleased to announce the signing of an agreement with FalconTech Co., Ltd. as a Solutions Centre partner and distributor for its additive manufacturing (AM) technology in China. Located in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, FalconTech is a technology and innovation company focusing on the rapid manufacturing of high performance components for aerospace, biomedical, marine, chemical and other engineering applications.

Under the partnership, FalconTech will set up an Additive Manufacturing Solutions Centre in Wuxi using Renishaw’s latest AM systems and supported by Renishaw’s extensive expertise in manufacturing solutions. FalconTech will also purchase ten RenAM 500M metal additive manufacturing systems over the next 18 months, with the first three units to be installed by the end of July 2017.

In addition, Renishaw will also purchase and promote FalconTech aerospace-grade titanium metal powders to its AM customers in China, and work with FalconTech to develop and optimise these powders for use on current and future ranges of AM machines.

The RenAM 500M is a laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing system designed specifically for the production of metal components on the factory floor. “This is an exciting new chapter for Renishaw in terms of our commitment to delivering the best solutions in additive manufacturing to key industries,” said Paul Gallagher, Managing Director/Vice President of Renishaw (Hong Kong) Ltd. “The combination of FalconTech’s knowledge of aerospace and its existing capabilities, combined with Renishaw’s leading edge technology and manufacturing expertise, gives us a dynamic partnership to provide the latest and most effective manufacturing solutions.”

Sandvik Coromant and PARC Partner to Advance Digital Manufacturing

Sandvik Coromant is strengthening its capabilities in Digital Manufacturing by signing a strategic research agreement with PARC, a Xerox company, world-renowned innovation center. PARC will provide Sandvik Coromant with a footprint in Silicon Valley and expert resources for research & development in the field of Digital Manufacturing.

PARC will allocate resources to conduct research & develop technologies within Digital Manufacturing for Sandvik Coromant under the terms of the agreement. Sandvik Coromant will also acquire all Intellectual Property (IP) and technology related to PARC’s software for high-level process planning and automated manufacturing cost estimation for subtractive manufacturing.

“This partnership is a natural step and in line with Sandvik Coromant’s long-term strategy to develop attractive solutions in the field of digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0,” said Magnus Ekbäck, Vice President and Head of Business Development and Digital Machining for Sandvik Coromant. “With this cooperation we will significantly strengthen our capabilities within digital machining.”

Medtec Europe 2017 Delivers Insights & Trends for the Medical Technology Industry with Record Attendance

Medtec Europe, the preeminent medical technology platform that brings together leading experts, buyers and sellers from across the medical technology industry, showed a record attendance this year in Stuttgart, Germany, with a 7% increase in overall visits. The event attracted 6,816 attendees over three days, 25% of whom were senior level decision makers and 65% of whom had purchasing power.

In addition, the new business matchmaking programme enabled 551 meetings and 3,498 business matches to take place, reflecting Medtec Europe’s strong commitment to driving business opportunities for the medical technology industry. Medtec Europe showcased presentations from industry leading experts on the importance of partnerships to design integrated solutions that will create the next generation of medical devices. Miniaturisation was one area where industry collaboration was highlighted as driving innovations. At the Medtec Insights Theatre Jens Troetzschel, Vice President Advanced Technologies, Heraeus Medical Components presented new technology the company recently developed, which facilitates new designs with unprecedented potential for miniaturisation of sensors and active medical implants. CerMet is a new biocompatible material technology that will enable a significantly increased number of communication ports, 3D-Design and integrated functionality. David Kleidermacher, Chief Security Officer, Blackberry, gave a presentation on the latest innovations in technology and security standards that highlighted how security of mobile devices to control medical devices will be a key component for stakeholders in the future, and that collaboration will be needed to ensure security does not become a barrier to innovation. “With more industries taking a role in the provision of healthcare products for patients and professionals, collaboration is becoming key. The medical technology industry can advance healthcare by taking a broader approach and offering more seats at the table during product development. This will increase opportunities to spring board big ideas that will lead to new and exciting innovations to provide even greater tangible benefits for patients. Through converging technologies the medical technology industry can improve clinical outcomes, enhance patient experience, and reduce the cost of healthcare.”said Jens Troetzschel.

A further output from Medtec Europe 2017 was the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning, i.e. artifical neural networks modelled on the human brain, in the future of medical devices. Dr Ed Cartwright, CEO and Co-Founder of Elixir Technologies, showcased an example of cooperation between medical devices and AI software to help predict strokes. Regenerative medicine is an area where collaboration will drive the industry forward. Professor Alexander Seifalian, Director of Nanotechnology & Regenerative Medicine Commercialisation Centre (Ltd), The London BioScience Innovation Centre showcased new innovations in regenerative medicine that need the support and expertise of the pharma industry to take these innovations from the bench to commercilisation.

 
Medtec Europe once again hosted the Start-up Academy, an initiative designed to bring Europe’s most exciting new medtech companies to the show to share the innovations of tomorrow. Selected companies were offered a free stand at the exhibition and a presentation slot from which to share their ideas and explore opportunities for partnering and collaboration – ‘a truly excellent experience’, according to Sandeep Shah, CEO, Tarilian Laser Technologies. The winner this year was Acquandas, a global supplier for sputtered, ultra-precision and high structured nitionol components, with their technological breakthrough microsystem fabrication process that enables disruptive therapies in the neuromodulation field, such as minimally invasive, intravascular deep brain stimulation.

Big Kaiser announces compact high speed chamfer cutter

 Big Kaiser, a global leader in premium high-precision tooling systems and solutions for the metal-working industries, today announced the C-Cutter Mini, an ultra-fast compact chamfer cutter.

The C-Cutter Mini is designed for multi-functional cutting tasks, including chamfering, back chamfering and face milling. Compared to competitors’ products, the tool’s market-leading speed and feed rate capability has the potential to slash machining times by up to 85 per cent.

The tool’s innovative design reduces the cutting diameter down to the lowest limit, enabling impressive ultra-high spindle speeds and feed rates. Cutting speed is further increased by new wear-resistant inserts with multi-layer Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) coating.).

Available in single insert and four insert configurations, the C-Cutter mini thereby provides additional flexibility to the customer. Increasing the number of inserts from one or two per cutter to four, multiplies the feed rate, which speeds up operations and improves productivity.

Big Kaiser is also introducing the world’s smallest hex insert, with a diameter of 3.97mm. This enables highly-efficient back chamfering from a 6mm starting hole diameter, whilst the 3-corner insert design reduces costs.

LPKF ProtoLaser R for Structuring LTCC Carbon Tape

The LPKF ProtoLaser R is the first com-pact laboratory laser with an ultrashort-pulse laser source. Its unique strengths are most obvious in the cold processing of thin layers.

In a re-cently presented tech paper, it demonstrated its precision on a special material. With a laser spot size of just 15 µm, it was able to structure and cut 0.2-mm-thick carbon tape for LTCC manufacturing.

 
The tech paper presents the test layout as well as the results in the form of microscope images with dimensions indicated. Scientific Prototyping Strategic Product Manager Lars Führmann is convinced: “On this materi-al, too, the LPKF ProtoLaser R demonstrates that USP processing is a key factor in achieving new, sophisticated product layouts.”

Servoline wins Red Dot for high quality design

The jury has reached its decision: After several days of assessing thousands of products from all over the world, the Servoline received the distinction “Red Dot”. With this press line, Schuler has created an outstanding design that the expert committee for the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017 has recognized with the internationally sought-after seal of quality.

“Our new Corporate Product Design aims to imbue our systems with an especially high-quality appearance for premium customers that underlines our position as leaders in forming technology, making it clear from an external perspective, too”, Schuler CEO Stefan Klebert explains. The design was developed jointly with the agency Teams in Esslingen, Germany.

Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award: “The winners are pursuing the right design strategy. They have recognized that good design and economic success go hand in hand. The award by the critical jury documents their high design quality and is indicative of their successful design policy.”

The significance of the international design competition with its headquarter in Essen, Germany is well established internationally. It was already more than 60 years ago that a jury convened for the first time to assess the best designs of the day. Since then, an expert team has been awarding the seal of quality for good design and innovation to the outstanding designs of the year.

Manufacturers and designers around the globe were also invited to enter their products in the 2017 competition. The jury of around 40 independent designers, design professors and specialist journalists tested, discussed and assessed each individual product, awarding the Honorable Mention for a well-conceived detail solution, the Red Dot for high design quality and the Red Dot: Best of the Best for groundbreaking design. In total, the competition received more than 5,500 entries from 54 countries this year.

The Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017 will culminate in Essen on 3 July 2017. This is when the Red Dot: Best of the Best laureates receive their trophies during the award ceremony. At the subsequent Designers’ Night after-show party, the award winners will celebrate in the midst of all the prize-winning products in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen, and the winners will receive their well-earned certificates. For five weeks, the special exhibition “Design on Stage” will present the awarded products of the year as part of the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design.

The Red Dot Design Yearbook 2017/2018 also comes out on 3 July. The international reference work for award-winning design presents all of the year’s winning products. They will also be presented on the Internet, in particular in the online presentation, the Red Dot App and on the design platform Red Dot 21.
