Joint Venture Römheld Rivi pools competencies

At the Fakuma, the newly established Roemheld subsidiary Römheld Rivi GmbH presents itself for the first time to a broad specialist audience. The new company pools competencies and activities of the Roemheld Group around the magnetic clamping technology. Besides the introduction of the company, the focus of the fair presentation will be on magnetic quick-clamping systems for plastics and rubber processing that are also suitable for high-temperature processes.

 
At Stand 1223 in Hall A1, the company presents the diversity of M-TECS magnetic clamping plates which can be used for working temperatures of up to 240°C. Thus, besides the application for injection moulding, also processing of rubber and high-tech thermoplastics as polyetheretherketone (PEEK) or polyphenylene sulphone (PPSU) is possible, where conventional magnetic clamping systems fail in the long run. So far, Römheld Rivi is the only company worldwide that offers magnetic clamping plates for such temperatures.

 
Quick clamping of different mould geometries and weights
For clamping and releasing, the magnetic clamping systems require only a short current pulse, in operation, they work without any power supply. Permanent magnets generate a magnetic field that penetrates a few millimetres deep into the mould and hold even heavy mould halves weighing several tons in the correct position and bring them together absolutely parallel. Thus, also elements with complex geometries can be exactly clamped without deformation within seconds. A further advantage of magnetic clamping systems is their flexibility: moulds of different sizes, weight and geometries can be clamped, a standardisation of the moulds is not required. All magnetic materials are clamped on the full surface and with a high bending stiffness. The uniform distribution of the clamping force ensures a low mould wear.

 
Processing of high-performance plastics
From the magnetic clamping technology benefit amongst others processors of thermoplastics such as PEEK that is used for example as sterilisable and biocompatible material in the medical technology, as flexible circuit carrier for electronic components or as heat-resistant material in the aerospace industry. In continuous use, the high-performance plastic can be used at temperatures up to 260°C; the smelting process only starts at approx. 335°C. This results in high mould temperatures during processing that create the need for appropriate clamping means. Magnetic clamping plates of the M-TECS series which are already used for more than a decade in the rubber industry at working temperatures up to 240°C are applied as quick-clamping systems. The size and shape of the magnetic clamping plates can be customised to the requirements of the client. Heating for high-temperature processes can be integrated. Since a clamping system consists only of a few components and has no moving parts, it can be retrofitted within a few hours on existing machines and then the system is in principle maintenance-free.

New subsidiary Römheld Rivi intends to develop the technology
To develop the magnetic clamping technology – among others for Industry 4.0 applications –  Hilma-Römheld has founded together with the Italian manufacturer of clamping means and long-term partner Rivi Magnetics S.r.L. the Joint Venture “Römheld Rivi”.

Self-contained vacuum chuck working with integrated vacuum supply

Witte has developed a completely new type of vacuum chuck which operates without any kind of extra vacuum supply unit.

The vacuum chuck consists of a patented vacuum supply unit with battery and an automatic control system. Safety equipment and signal lights that show clamping and battery loading condition are also integrated and ensure process safety

Great versatility
Depending on ambient conditions and type of part capacity is sufficient for several hours or shifts. The clamping surface can be individually configured according to conditions of use. Designs which include two vacuum sections, one to clamp to the machine table and one to clamp a work piece on the top, are also possible and show the great versatility of this new type of vacuum clamping system. Both vacuum areas are strictly separated and operate independently of each other. 5-side machining with all imaginable degrees of freedom is possible.

Collet chuck module for cylindrical parts

Schunk, the competence leader for clamping technology and gripping systems extends its modular system for efficient workpiece clamping with a particularly smart collet chuck module for parts with cylindrical shanks.

Lengths of pipes, shafts, and other small parts can be precisely clamped with the Schunk Vero-S SEZ within a very short time, and can be machined from five sides with an optimal accessibility. The same applies for unstable workpieces with a short shank. Since the system can be quickly made ready for use, it is particularly suitable for machining individual pieces, small series such as plungers and ejectors in tool and mold making. First of all, the comparably light but robust collet chuck module is put onto an existing Schunk Vero-S quick-change module, is equipped with a workpiece, and then the pull-down jaw system is activated.

Maximum clamping precision and more
This ensures a maximum clamping precision, great dimensional stability, and an adjustable depth stop provides for a great repeat accuracy. Coolant is discharged through an integrated drain. Since the system can be used together with all common ER collet chucks, it provides a maximum degree of flexibility to the users. The Schunk Vero-S SEZ collet chuck modules are available for Schunk Vero-S NSE plus 138-V1 (ER 32-120 and ER 40-120), and Vero-S NSE mini 90-V1 (ER 25-100) quick-change pallet modules. The clamping diameter amounts from 2 to 20 mm (ER 32-120), 3 to 26 mm (ER 40-120), or 1 to 16 mm (ER 25-100). The maximum clamping depths is 96 mm (Vero-S SEZ), or 85 mm (Vero-S SEZ mini).

High accuracy of chucks can normally be achieved using self-stable but completely light-proof designs, which means use in laboratories or optical areas is often restricted. Application possibilities incorporating light transmittance, either via built-in lighting elements or via transparent structures, are increasingly in demand.

The chuck is no longer a burden
Together with 3-D-Micromac AG in Chemnitz Horst Witte Gerätebau Barskamp KG developed a light transmitting vacuum chuck. Thus optical recognition systems can now be used for detecting components while parts are clamped. Other transparent objects such as foils can be gently clamped with the help of a light transmitting vacuum chuck for optical inspection.

The collet chuck system is made particularly interesting by its diverse combination and conversion options. In less than a minute, it can be converted from external to internal clamping through the innovative quick change function that has been registered for a patent. In addition, the CAPTIS clamping system is captivating due to the high repeatability and run-out value as well as good power transmission without deforming the workpiece.The power-operated, rotating CAPTIS collet chuck with its modular construction is suitable for use in turning machines and ensures the greatest flexibility. The compact structure creates more working room in the machine.

The combination and conversion possibilities in detail

  • The CAPTIS-D, which is equipped with axial tightening for machining bars can be easily converted to the CAPTIS-A – and vice versa. This makes it possible to install a workpiece stop that can be clamped on the flange-type components with a keep-down effect.
  • The CAPTIS-AF with an axially fixed collet and optional workpiece stop is ideally suited for delicate workpieces, short clamping surfaces and use in counter spindles.
  • The stationary CAPTIS-MS collet chuck is suitable for use in drilling, milling and machining centres and for manual machining. It is operated manually with hydraulic power intensification. It is extremely easy to use. It is enough to turn the key a maximum of 180 degrees to clamp the collet.
  • The CAPTIS-MS can be clamped on three sides and can be optionally equipped with a front or internal stop.

As a completely modular system, it is possible to combine the individual components, like the CAPTIS collet chuck, CAPTIS collet and ABSIS-C mandrel, depending on the application, which provides even more flexibility.

Quick and easy testing of clamping forces

To achieve optimum results in machining quality, workpieces have to be clamped with the right force. That way, deformations can be prevented, for example.

Here, the ideal clamping force is not only dependent on the actuating force, but also the centrifugal force behaviour of the chuck. That is where the new F-senso “chuck” clamping force measurement device from Röhm, the clamping and gripping technology specialist, comes into play. It makes a combined measurement of the clamping force and rotational speed possible – and in the process outputs it directly to the centrifugal force curve of the chuck.

Quick and easy
A broad range of applications can be covered with just one base unit. The measurement range is 0 – 300 kN, and the clamping diameter is from 75 – 175 millimetres. F-senso “chuck” is also suitable for speeds of up to 8,250 rpm. And, the handling is totally easy. The device is simply clamped in the chuck, and additional attachments on the machine are not necessary. The measured values are transmitted in real time via Bluetooth to the supplied tablet PC. The pre-installed software is very user-friendly and intuitive to use. It facilitates the automatic creation of measurement reports. Automatic switch-off is included as well as an additional insert aid for easy positioning in the clamping device. The product comes in a practical hard-shell case that protects the F-senso “chuck” against damage. F-senso “chuck” can be converted in just seconds from three to two clamping points, and it can also be used to measure the clamping force of vices.

A single interface for the whole production process

Particularly in individual part and small series production, the clamping of the workpiece is a time-consuming and cost-intensive factor. That calls for effective strategies for increasing productivity by reducing set-up times. Palletising systems such as the Power-Grip zero-point clamping system from Röhm offer a significant boost in productivity.

This modular system meets the demands for customised solutions with the best possible utilisation of the machine capacity. Whereas to date the machine tool was at a standstill while the workpiece was being clamped, today the workpiece can be positioned and clamped on the pallet outside the machine tool. The set-up time is now limited to the few seconds necessary for changing of the pallets. If several machining processes are necessary for production of the part, the pallet with workpiece can be loaded without losing its zero point. Thanks to its sturdy and corrosion-resistance device, the Power-Grip zero-point clamping system during the whole process, from machining through electrical discharge machining (EDM) right up to the measuring machines.

When precision is needed
Thanks to cushioned, conical centring with a levelling system, accuracy of +/- 0.002 mm is achieved in permanent use. Even with thermal changes, zero point clamping is ensured throughout. The use of palletising and clamping devices from a single source has decisive advantages. The prefabricated pallets can be combined in a modular system with a multitude of Röhm standard clamping devices. There is no need at all for complex adaptation of the clamping devices or pallets. Here, Röhm provides standard pallets for vices and chucks.
