Delcam to hold webinars on Vortex high-efficiency roughing

Delcam is to present a series of webinars on its Vortex high-efficiency roughing strategy, which has been shown to achieve savings of up to 90% in the time needed for area clearance.

Using Vortex in Delcam for SolidWorks gave a 90% time saving when roughing this mould insert.

The webinars, which will run under the headline New Tools, New Rules, will cover the use of Vortex in each of Delcam’s CAM products as follows:

  • 20th November – Vortex in PowerMILL
  • 27th November – Vortex in FeatureCAM
  • 9th December – Vortex in FeatureCAM
  • 11th December – Vortex in PartMaker
  • 18th December – Vortex in Delcam for SolidWorks

The Vortex strategy gives the fastest safe metal removal from solid carbide tooling, in particular designs that give deeper cuts by using the full flute length as the cutting surface.  It can be used for two- and three-axis roughing, three-plus-two-axis area clearance and for rest machining.  It gives benefits when machining all types of materials, including titanium, tool steel and alloys such as Inconel.

Delcam to show PartMaker programming and modelling at SIAMS

Delcam will demonstrate the 2014 versions of its PartMaker CAM system for Swiss-type lathes, turn-mill equipment and bar-fed mills, and the PartMaker Modeling CAD-for-CAM software at the SIAMS exhibition to be held in Moutier, Switzerland, from 6th to 9th May.

PartMaker 2014 includes Delcam’s Vortex high-efficiency area clearance strategy and many other enhancements.
PartMaker 2014 includes Delcam’s Vortex high-efficiency area clearance strategy and many other enhancements.

PartMaker 2014 marks the introduction of Delcam’s Vortex high-efficiency strategy for area clearance into the PartMaker CAM suite.  Other enhancements in the 2014 version include improved back-turning and 2D pocketing functionality, support for additional tool types and faster programming of lead-in and lead-out moves, and a new NC program viewer among other improvements.

Optimal cutting conditions
Vortex is Delcam’s newest proprietary high-speed roughing technology.  Vortex controls the maximum engagement angle of the cutter in the material, such that the angle calculated for the programmed stepover is never exceeded, even in internal corners.  This allows for optimal cutting conditions to be maintained throughout the toolpath.
By controlling the maximum engagement angle and the load on the tool, Vortex can take deeper cuts than traditionally used in roughing operations.  Depths of cut up to the full flute length enable maximum material removal rate from solid carbide tooling and reduce machining times by up to 70%.

Back turning tools included
PartMaker 2014 also includes improved functionality to support the automated programming of back-turning tools.  These tools are used across a wide variety of small-part turning applications, particularly in Swiss machining. With their unique geometry and cutting characteristics, back-turning tools can eliminate the need for multiple tools and so can reduce cycle time and improve surface finish.

Delcam achieves record orders in December

Birmingham-based CADCAM developer Delcam is pleased to announce that, in line with the trading update made on 18 December 2012, it achieved a new one-month record in December 2012 for orders of software licences and maintenance contracts. Orders increased by more than 10% over the December 2011 figure, completing a record quarter to end the year.

Chief Executive, Clive Martell, is delighted by Delcam’s December results.

The growth came not only from the company’s established markets in the automotive and aerospace industries but also from newer markets, such as the dental sector.  There were particularly strong performances by the company’s Beijing and Philadelphia offices, its Italian subsidiary and its Korean joint venture. In addition, the year has seen a large number of significantly improved results from Delcam’s international sales network.

New record levels
This latest achievement follows the highest-ever first-half sales by the company, in the six months to 30 June 2012, continuing the trend that has seen the company set new record levels of sales for five consecutive half-year periods.

Clive Martell, Chief Executive of Delcam, says, “December is traditionally the best month of the year for our software business and it is encouraging to see that we continue to set new records.  I am delighted that Delcam has ended an already strong year on a new high.”
