At Midest, I discovered an excellent book about how to design parts for moulding. This yellow book is part of the well-known "Something for Dummies" series and has been published in collaboration between the publisher and proto labs, the worldwide specialist for on-line injection moulding and parts machining. Meeting with Bernard Faure, proto labs’ commercial director for France. The concept of proto labs is to provide real parts within very short deadlines. By real parts we mean parts in (…)

Delcam adds probing capabilities to FeatureCAM
Delcam has added new probing capabilities in the 2013 version of its FeatureCAM feature-based CAM software. The ability to incorporate probing sequences into CAM programs makes it easier to undertake unsupervised production operations by allowing automated checks to be carried out before, during and after machining. Probing sequences can now be included within CAM programs from FeatureCAM. Probing paths can be generated for five feature types: pockets, obstructed pockets and webs; inside (…)

Revolutionary innovations in the CT960 from Studer
It has been on the market for ten years and was presented in a new guise at AMB Stuttgart – the enhanced CT960 universal internal grinding machine from Studer. The all-rounder with four spindles for complex grinding tasks has received revolutionary innovations in the area of the B-axis and the grinding spindle turret – for even greater precision and speed. For every internal cylindrical grinding application Studer has the optimal machine – primarily for use in machine tools and toolmaking as (…)

Innovative servomotors slash CNC machine building costs
NUM announces two new brushless servomotor ranges for CNC machinery applications which provide major savings by eliminating the need for a separate encoder cable. Machine builders can now use a single drive-to-motor cable for each motion axis, thereby reducing cabling, speeding installation/commissioning, and improving system performance. NUM estimates that for a typical high-end CNC machine installation involving 20 meters cable lengths, the new technology can reduce total motor cabling (…)

Meet the expert - Implants
Next spring the Medical Cluster, RMS Foundation and inspire will organise the conference [MEET THE EXPERT] Implants. This event will take place on April 22-23, 2013 at the Congress Centre Kursaal Interlaken. The goal of the conference is to offer a platform for discussion and knowledge transfer between individuals active in the implant field. In addition to keynote lectures, short presentations (15 min.) of current projects from select companies will be given and discussed. To ensure a (…)

B axis for greater productivity
At the start of 2010 Tornos launched the EvoDeco 16 machine. This turning machine, designed to replace the famous Deco 13a, with its four independent tool systems, has slotted seamlessly into the technical parts market. In early 2013, the manufacturer will deliver the first of these machines equipped with a B axis. To find out more, we met with Philippe Charles, product manager for Tornos. Perfectly integrated into the secondary operation process, this tool system, equipped with 3 powered (…)

Alphacam accuracy helps swiss watches keep perfect time
Production engineering solutions required by many leading Swiss watch-makers are installed in their CNC machines when they buy them. Bumotec, based in the tiny Swiss village of Sâles just a few miles from the Prealp mountains, pride themselves on not simply producing standard machines. Almost every one they supply has been trialled by manufacturing the customer’s parts on it, and comes complete with the Alphacam CNC programs for those parts. All Bumotec machines are adapted to provide (…)
