A threading solution for each application

May 2010

When machining titanium and titanium alloys, stainless steel or nickel alloys, depending on the size and depth of the internal screw threads to be produced, cutting thread-tap technology is not the most effective, neither in terms of reliability nor in terms of machining time. The company DC Swiss in Malleray, specialized in the production of threading tools, and whose reputation for quality is well-known, is today presenting a new range of carbide milling cutters designed for carrying out thread whirling operations. Interview with Mr Francis Ryf, sales and marketing director.

When producing an internal screw thread of M 0.3 for example, the pitch becomes too big in relation to the diameter and difficulties in chip evacuation make the use of a thread tap impossible. Tapping depths are also often much longer than standard dimensions. Mr Ryf explains, "The market requires tools which can carry out tapping operations with depths of up to four times the diameter and today our customers are using these tools successfully". In this kind of situation, the use of a thread whirl cutter is recommended.

A new product range The new range of single-piece carbide thread whirl cutters on offer from DC Swiss can produce threads from 0.3 mm up to 6 mm with a depth of up to four times the diameter in all difficult-to-machine materials, in complete safety on a HSC machining centre or an automatic lathe with a high-frequency spindle. These new thread whirl cutters enrich DC Swiss’s very extensive standard range and confirm this manufacturer’s major role in the very demanding field of threading.

What are the only conditions for access to the use of this technology? The user must machine with at least 3 synchronised axes, work using a high-frequency means of production and possess perfectly concentric clamping devices, which is nothing special when we consider the capabilities of current CNC machines.

Tool life, quality and innovation A thread whirl cutter used in good working conditions can carry out from 500 to 1 000 perfect machining operations in difficult materials such as stainless steel or titanium. To reach this performance, DC Swiss produces all its tools in a single chucking in order to guarantee the very high quality and precision which has made its reputation in the field of threading. The manufacturer possesses its own research laboratory equipped with several machine tools permanently connected to complete measuring systems. Each innovation or improvement is thus tested in full scale production. Mr Ryf tells us, « We produce over 5 000 tools daily and make no compromise on quality. The new thread whirl cutters clearly benefit from our experience of over 70 years in the production of threading tools ». How can you not want to try them out!

You can see all these new thread whirl cutters at the EPHJ/EPMT trade fair on stand 11 A2.
