New event to focus on Manufacturing & Engineering in the North East

Taking place at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on 8th-9th July 2015, Manufacturing & Engineering North East will showcase the region’s strengths and provide a platform for the local and national manufacturers, engineers and their suppliers to meet, learn, solve problems and develop business ideas.

The event will comprise three key elements covering the full range of design, production and manufacturing:
With keynotes from senior manufacturing and engineering professionals at leading brands across the aerospace, automotive, motorsport and electronics sectors, the Manufacturing & Engineering North East conference will provide delegates with powerful content spanning all areas of production, design and manufacturing management.
High quality practical workshops will also be taking place on both days. The workshop sessions will provide best practice learning and insight into the latest engineering and manufacturing techniques. Subjects covered will range from metrology and rapid prototyping, to factory floor automation and test and measurement.
“Ultimately, the event’s most fundamental aim is to champion the manufacturing industry in the region and offer professionals in the sector a comprehensive event focusing on their needs. German machine tool industry puts in a notable finishing sprint for 2014

In the fourth quarter of 2014, order bookings in the German machine tool industry were up by an impressive 15 per cent compared to the final quarter of 2013, a steeper rise than expected. Orders from abroad rose by 24 per cent, while for the domestic market the figure was 1 per cent down on the preceding year’s equivalent result. For 2014 as a whole, there is a total plus of 4 per cent, with domestic orders up by 6 per cent, and orders from abroad by 4 per cent.

“So for the German machine tool industry, 2014 ended with a notable finishing sprint,” is how Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Executive Director of the sectoral organisation VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association) comments the result. The cause involved, following a mixed second half to the year, was a substantial plus in order bookings of 36 per cent in December. This very significant increase was attributable primarily to export business, which grew by 56 per cent. Domestic orders, meanwhile, with a modest increase of 3 per cent, stayed more or less static, compared with a strong reference month in the preceding year.

The increase in December was based not only on a few major projects, but additionally boosted by very sizeable projects from outside the Eurozone.In the year’s fourth quarter, the manufacturers of metal-cutting machine tools reported consistently good business, with a plus of 9 per cent, resulting primarily from export orders. Over the year as a whole, the orders for metal-cutting technology rose by 4 per cent, while forming technology orders, too, were up significantly in the year’s fourth quarter, by 33 per cent. In 2014 as a whole, order bookings for forming technology were up by 5 per cent.

Germany’s industrial sector is at present benefiting from falling energy prices, caused by the plummeting price of oil. The weak euro, moreover, is improving the price-competitiveness of capital goods abroad. For 2015, the German machine tool industry is anticipating a recovery in demand, from the domestic and export markets alike. “This means that the sector is well-positioned for 2015,” said the VDW’s Executive Director Schäfer.

To pave the way for growth, Polydec has acquired new industrial premises in Bienne. These much larger premises will enable the company to increase its production capacity.

Sandvik Coromant support for automotive sector embraces extensive machining solutions for transmission shafts

The Sandvik Coromant portfolio of automotive component manufacturing solutions offers a selection of tools and insert grades designed to optimize the machining of transmission shafts.

Beginning with soft stage steel turning, high-performance GC4325 and GC4315 insert grades for internal and external operations offer superior levels of wear resistance, the ability to withstand high cutting temperatures and cutting edges that stay in shape for long times in cut.

Moving to hard part turning, CBN inserts are the first choice for turning high quality steel surfaces in the hardness range 58-65 HRc. CBN inserts from Sandvik Coromant have wiper options optimized for specific applications: WH (wiper HPT) generates low cutting forces for best surface integrity, while WG (wiper general) permits higher feed capacity.

The CoroCut® 1-2 grooving programme offers a number of benefits to those machining transmission shafts. For instance, patented spring clamping delivers high rigidity and clamping force accuracy, while both over- and under high precision coolant is available and easily connected via plug and play adaptors. What’s more, CoroCut 1-2 is now available in GC4325 high performance grade for steel.

Clearly, as a transmission shaft, these complex components demand numerous gear and spline milling operations. Among the tools ideal for addressing this challenge is CoroMill 176, an innovative indexable insert cutter for productive gear wheel machining that is designed for gears in the module range 4 to 10. Also, deployed widely for transmission shaft applications are the CoroMill 172 disc cutter for milling high-quality gear profiles and, similarly, CoroMill 171 for small gear modules. The latter features inserts with two cutting edges, while the same cutter body can hold inserts for different gear profiles.

Other gear and spline profiles on transmission shafts can be tackled using InvoMilling™, the unique Sandvik Coromant approach to milling spur and helical gears using indexable insert cutters, along with CoroMill 161 and 162. Using this single tool set on multi-task machines or five-axis machining centres it is possible to create many different profiles by simply changing the CNC program instead of changing the tool.

Extrugliss ST also presents fewer disadvantages than a phosphate treatment. Easy to handle and without usage of products classified as toxic2, Extrugliss ST also allows a reduction in the treatment and recycling of effluents.

Countdown to Moulding Expo 2015 is on

Great anticipation among exhibitors about their new exhibition Over the past few weeks, the two Moulding Expo project managers, Florian Niethammer and Florian Schmitz, have repeatedly stressed the importance of “organising an exhibition based on the requirements of the exhibiting companies”.


This is the only way the international event can really be implemented under the slogan “By the industry for the industry”. Statements from some selected exhibitors already show they are looking forward to the first Moulding Expo. Moulding Expo in Stuttgart, which will take place from 5 to 8 May, is the première for a platform where leading companies in the tool-making, model-making and mould construction industry will present their expertise and products to international customers every two years. The full range of high technology the industry has to offer will be on show – from dies for injection moulding and casting to the latest developments in model-making and prototype construction or additive manufacturing (AM) processes. In Stuttgart visitors can also expect to see technology highlights from all the renowned suppliers and service providers in the industry. Besides customers of the tool, model and mould making industries – for example users from the automotive, medical engineering and plastics industries – Moulding Expo also targets designers, product developers and tool, model and mould makers themselves.

Over 20 per cent of companies exhibiting their innovations in Stuttgart come from abroad. At present, three exhibition halls, 4, 6 and 8, are already booked up with more than 390 exhibitors. By the beginning of May, it is expected that there will be more than 400 exhibitors and a total of 31,500 square metres will be fully booked.
