Mini tool system with sintered chip breaker geometry

October 2009

Another piece of new discovered at EMO is the Mini tool system by Horn. These Tools are dedicated to relatively large diameters from 8 mm to 20 mm. Paul Horn is well known in “our small and precise world” for its smaller tools, the Supermini.

Supermini characteristics •  More than 1,200 standard inserts can be clamped in a toolholder. •  Boring out from bore diameter 0.2 mm •  Grooving from bore diameter 2 mm •  Axial grooving from diameter 5 mm •  Chamfering, profiling, backboring and threading

New inserts for grooving and boring out Inserts of the Horn Mini system with sintered chip breaker geometry can be used for grooving and boring in entry bore diameters from 8 mm. Using the newly developed 18P inserts, possible applications of Mini are extended to 20 mm bore diameter and groove depths up to 8 mm. Together with the existing ground carbide inserts, the Mini tool system now offers two insert versions to satisfy a wider range of applications with groove depths from 1 to 3 mm and material-specific chip shape geometries. Corner radii of 0.2 and 0.4 mm are available for boring out.

The inserts are available from stock with different widths and groove depths for machining steel and cast iron. Where required the intermediate dimensions or corner radii of the sintered inserts can be adjusted for special tasks while preserving the sintered chip shape geometries. Extremely short delivery times are guaranteed. The new sintered inserts provide an ongoing benefit for existing users of the Mini system as they are fully comptatible with existing shanks. The positive fit connection between insert and shank ensures maximum torque transmission combined with precise concentricity.
