Production cylindrical grinding machine for micro components

September 2013

With the Studer S11 cylindrical grinding machine, Studer will bring a surprise to the market at EMO 2013. The recent S11 is the smallest machine in Studer’s portfolio and tailor made for workpieces up to 200 mm.

Practically excluded: A Studer S11 has already been undergoing an endurance test in 2 and 3-shift operation for almost two years. The empirical values gathered from the endurance test were integrated into the final detailed developments, enabling a production-proven Studer S11 to be launched to the market.

This extremely compact machine concept delivers a level of productivity that will amaze even experienced grinding specialists. The cylindrical grinding sector has not yet seen a machine of this compactness for this range of parts on the market.

Twice the productivity on the same area The following comparison shows what the new machine is capable of. Anyone who still uses a Studer S36 today and produces parts up to a maximum length of 200 mm, can now use two new Studer S11s on the same production area as that required for an S36. And one S11 alone has a 15% higher productivity than the Studer S36. In concrete terms this means: two Studer S11s can produce up to 230 % more on the same area as that required for a Studer S36.

Compact design - high precision When it comes to grinding, precision is the be-all and end-all. Initial empirical values in respect of precision are provided by the manufacture of injection nozzles for stroke piston motors. This requires roundness tolerances under 5/10 µm in series and a straightness under 1 µm. The S11 is well below these limits in practice. This is ensured not only by Studer’s precision machine tool construction and an excellent heat management system but also, lastly, by the in-process gauging and control system.
