Vero Rolls Out New High Speed All-Format 3D Viewer

Vero Software is rolling out a new high speed 3D viewer which directly displays and evaluates 3D CAD files without the need for the original CAD application. PartXplore can open the native files of Edgecam, VISI and WorkNC, with further brands in the Vero portfolio expected to follow suit in 2016 R2.


PartXplore has been created to efficiently import and analyse all file types and sizes at high speed. It often takes less than half the time to open a file compared to the original CAD application. Both novices and experienced users can build virtual unified prototypes or 3D models imported from a wide range of file formats, including Catia, NX, Parasolid, SolidWorks, Solid Edge, STEP, IGES and many more. The software saves the native CAD data in its own lightweight format, meaning manufacturers can carry out tasks such as calculating surface areas and volumes, and measuring thickness, dimensions and angles without requiring the original CAD information.

PartXplore Product Manager Massimo Vergerio says: “Users don’t have to worry about format compatibility, or what CAD system their customers use. And a stand-alone lightweight application enables users to easily sends 3D parts to colleagues and sub-contractors through the internet, where recipient can immediately display and work on the 3D model.”

Even staff who are not CAD experts can quickly master the software’s wide range of 2D and 3D measurement functions, by using predefined selection modes such as points, 2D entities, planes and surfaces. Measurements can be automatically included as entities and anchored to characteristic points of the part. Entity labels automatically pivot to remain visible at all times.
Specialist functions allow more experienced CAD users to recover point clusters from 3D measuring equipment or machine probes, and to quickly check revisions against the original CAD geometry. Point files can also be generated easily for sending to 3D measuring equipment and NC machines.
Ideas, observations, instructions and change requests can be conveyed quickly and easily. The need for 2D drawings is minimised, as users add dimensional and geometric measurements, annotations and labels directly to the 3D model.
A full range of specialist analysis tools assist with quotes, diagnostics, assembly notes, and preparing 3D models. Much of the analysis functionality is normally only associated with more expensive CAD solutions. The inside of parts and assemblies can be explored with high performance sectioning; the section plane rotated, panned or following a guide curve, simply by mouse clicks. Curvature radius and plane face analysis is a valuable tool for providing accurate production times. In addition, draft angles and undercuts can be calculated and displayed extremely quickly, even on large components.
Timeline animations are set up by initiating basic movements such as translation, rotation or following a guide curve.
Collision Detection:
Dynamic collision analysis ensures real-time control of mechanism interoperability or process control. Short videos can also be generated.
Screen captures illustrate technical documents and assembly sheets…and a large number of images can be readily managed and distributed.

Renishaw unveils Inspection Plus with SupaTouch™ optimisation delivering intelligent speed

Intelligent software optimises on-machine probing cycles. Renishaw, a market-leading engineering technologies company, will introduce Inspection Plus with SupaTouch™ at EMO 2015, Milan, Italy (5th-10th October). This enhanced software package automatically optimises on-machine measurement cycles to minimise cycle time and maximise productivity.

The software features an easy-to-use optimisation process to automatically determine and select the highest feedrates a machine tool can achieve whilst maintaining measurement accuracy. It also uses intelligent in-cycle decision making to implement either a one or two-touch probing strategy for each measurement routine.

Inspection Plus with SupaTouch optimisation eliminates the need for manual optimisation of on-machine positioning feedrates, measurement feedrates and strategies. When compared with traditional software cycles, it provides a significant cycle time reduction of up to 60% on CNC machine tools.

To ensure maximum accuracy, the software detects any measurements taken during machine acceleration or deceleration phases and compensates for errors by taking corrective action and remeasuring. What is IF-Edgmaster
The IF-EdgeMaster is an optical 3D measurement device to automatically measure cutting tools. Typically, the system is used to measure cutting edges regardless of type, size, material or surface finish of the tool. Delcam’s new PowerSHAPE offers extra “design for manufacture” functions

The 2014 release of Delcam’s PowerSHAPE CAD software offers a range of new functionality for the conversion of product designs into tooling designs.  The software now provides an even more powerful set of easy-to-use tools to increase productivity through increased automation and improved workflow.

By offering a combination of modelling and reverse engineering functionality, PowerSHAPE provides the most comprehensive range of design techniques available in a single CAD program.  Having all the different technologies in the same package reduces the need to transfer data between multiple programs and so streamlines the whole product development process.

Smart Feature Manager
The Solid Doctor in PowerSHAPE has offered quick and easy repair of imported data from other CAD systems for many years.  For the 2014 release, these capabilities have been enhanced with the addition of the Smart Feature Manager.  PowerSHAPE can already recognise a variety of solid features within imported “dumb” geometry, such as fillets, slots, bosses etc.  The Smart Feature Manager allows users to identify all these features within a solid in a single operation and so makes the analysis of the imported data easier and faster.

To the help of tool designers
One common problem for tooling designers is finding fillets that are too small for successful filling of the mould.  The Smart Feature Manager can be used to identify all the fillets having radii less than a particular size so that they can be modified to more suitable values.
Another common requirement for tooling design is adding draft surfaces and split surfaces to the model. These modifications and similar repetitive tasks have been made simpler through the addition of “Apply” buttons to all the surface-creation dialogs that allow multiple operations or operations on multiple surfaces without leaving the form.  Clicking the right mouse button has the same effect as pressing “Apply”, which further speeds up repetitive operations.

Many improvements
The new version of PowerSHAPE includes many novelties and improvements, for instance:

  • The core/cavity separation wizard has been rewritten to make it even faster and more effective
  • Any ambiguous faces can be assigned to the appropriate side. If required, individual faces can be split and then attached to the correct part of the tool.
  • Throughout the process, clear graphical feedback, including undercut shading, highlights any potential moulding issues arising from the design.
  • New “solid extrusion” tool that allows solids to be created from multiple nested curves in a single operation.

Exceptional first steps

In our previous edition, we exclusively introduced the Tornos SwissNano machine (download it here). Since then, it has been unveiled for the first time at the Tornos open days in Moutier. We wanted to find out how it had been received by customers and hear about the results of this exhibition. Interview with Brice Renggli, marketing manager.


“It was an exceptional success: We welcomed 340 visitors – a 30% increase on the previous year’s watchmaking days. We sold 25 machines in a week” explains Mr Renggli, by way of introduction. To find another such example of customer enthusiasm for a machine manufactured in Moutier, we need to go back 17 years to the launch of the famous Deco 2000 7/10 mm capacity machines.

And the tablet?
All the machines sold during the exhibition have an integrated PC which allow a connection to the tablet, enabling production to be monitored. “Our customers could see beyond the gadget appeal’. Having the latest versions of the service instructions directly on the tablet, for example, was highly appreciated. Being able to have an integrated PC also brings a wide range of additional possibilities, such as managing stock of parts on the machine, for example” explains Mr Renggli. Customers also liked the customisation of the Fanuc control screens. Developed using the “Android logic’’, these pages are very intuitive and user-friendly.

Tornos store
The company is setting set up a virtual store for downloading applications for the tablet. Mr Renggli explains: “With a tablet running with Android, customers can download a free application which allows them to have a system for keeping service instructions continuously up-to-date, communicating news to them and giving them access to the Forum”. Access to this is restricted to SwissNano customers. (Not on-line yet).

Roughing 400% faster

GibbsCAM VoluMill has made it possible for Quelch Engineering Ltd to achieve some startling reductions in its machining cycle times. The Uxbridge based company specialises in aerospace, motor sport, petrochemical and electronic components, including parts for the Ariane space rocket.

As a subcontractor, a high proportion of parts are new and unique, leading to a heavy demand for CNC programming. Quelch Engineering first invested in GibbsCAM in 1999, choosing it for its simplicity of operation. Now the company has two seats of the software using it to program all of its 11 CNC machines including Milling, Turning and MTM Mill/Turn. Chairman, Alan See, says “We have a policy of continuous investment to ensure we can keep ahead of the technological demands of our market and deliver high quality products on time at a competitive cost”.

An evolving product
As part of this investment program, Quelch Engineering has continuously invested in its GibbsCAM software adding modules for 4-axis Positional and Rotary machining, solid modeling, multi task machining and full 3D machining With the ability to read native CAD models including CATIA V5, Pro-Engineer, NX-CAD and Solidworks, to name but a few. The VoluMill module was the next logical investment. In 2009 Quelch Engineering became the first company in the United Kingdom to install the GibbsCAM VoluMill Module achieving some truly remarkable results.

Intelligent algorithm
GibbsCAM VoluMill has been designed for ultra high-performance 2, 3 and 4 axis roughing by optimising the feedrate, toolpath and cutting conditions to achieve the shortest possible cycle time.
The intelligent algorithm in the software considers heat dissipation through the chips, keeping the workpiece and tools at a constant temperature, while curves and arcs are introduced into the cutterpath to produce smooth fluid movements of the tool. The software also enables the programmer to rough as deep as possible, to make use of the full length of the tool. It then automatically re-roughs the large steps produced, ready for part finishing.

Established in 1982, Jinfo SA celebrates 30 years with customers

Jinfo expands its product range with Mastercam
For 2 years, Jinfo has been working closely with CNC Software Europe SA for the development of Mastercam Swiss Expert, a CAM system designed for high precision turning. In proposing today Mastercam for other types of NC machines, Jinfo markets all the Mastercam applications.

This CAM system allows 2 to 5 axes milling, turning, ripping for machining of wood, wire EDM and 2D/3D surface and volume design. In addition, the software suite includes the following applications:

  • Robotmaster, a software that allows to program a robot like a numerically controlled machine tool
  • Verisurf Reverse, a set of functions to pass from a points file to a CAD model

Mastercam Swiss Expert version 2012
The 2012 version brings many new features requested by high precision turners, while improving the user interface. In addition, it contains environments of new turning machines, including the EvoDeco series from Tornos and all NC machine tools with B-axis, such as Citizen M32 type VIII and Tsugami HS207.
These environments include: 3D modeling of the machine, kinematics of the axes, tools and tools position management, specific synchronizations, post-processor for ISO, TB-Deco or other. Therefore the high precision turner works with the computer as if he were in front of his machine to optimize the programming.
