To face materials difficult to machine

December 2012

In the sector of mechanical engineering, automotive and medical technologies, new high-tech materials set the tone. At the same time, demand is moving towards more accuracy and more tight tolerances, requiring rethinking and continuously optimizing existing tooling systems. By launching the 638 EVO-Line range, Zecha Hartmetall-Werkzeugfabrikation GmbH expands its portfolio of products and offers new solutions to machine difficult materials.

The tools of the 638 EVO-Line shine because of their mirror surfaces. They also offer greater stability through their reinforced shank and greater longevity, even if they are used for machining difficult materials.

If materials more difficult to machine are blossoming in different industries, this operation remains a challenge, notably in terms of profitability. The demands on the tools used are very high as they are the "interface" between the material and the machine. Zecha Hartmetall-Werkzeugfabrikation GmbH offers a wide range of tools to perform up to the most complex operations. With the new 638 EVO-Line, the company launches a series that covers a range from 3 to 6 mm in diameter and is well suited also for steels, titanium, or cast iron.

Extremely stable thanks to the reinforced shank The advantages of the new Evo line are multiple. Zecha’s European Sales Director, Cris Assandri, explains why: "We have decisively improved some essential aspects of the geometry of the 638 tools. Users can now operate their machine at higher speeds and work with a wide range of materials. We have been able to reduce vibrations during machining thanks to a reinforced shank. This increases the surface finish and ensures very good repeatability, no matter what material, like non-alloy steel, cast steel or titanium, we have to machine".

The drills of the 638 series are characterised by a 30° helix angle which, combined with mirror surfaces guarantee an excellent chips evacuation. Their specific geometric shape on the front reduces the axial stress of machining and their 130° point angle ensures the centering of the drill and positioning accuracy.

New tailor-made coating The new 638 series complement the 633 and 634 Zecha series that are available in diameters from 0.78 to 3.0 mm. They differ one from the other by the cutting length which is 4 x D for the 633 series and goes even further in depth (7 x D) for the 634 range. "Common to these three series are their longevity and the accuracy of the machining results" says Cris Assandri.

When drilling hard materials, tools are specifically exposed to high thermal stresses and a high level of wear. This is the reason why the sharp blades and mirror surfaces of the 638 series drills are covered with an innovative and tailor made wear resistant protective coating.
