The new generation of 5-axis micromachines

After the takeover of Kummer Frères by Precitrame Machines, an analysis of the K5 product showed that it still had too many teething problems to be marketed in volume. This triggered the immediate development of a new generation of micromachine, which was eagerly awaited by the microtechnology industry. This modernisation also makes it possible to integrate new functions and options requested by the markets.

Standalone machines
In its simplest form, the K5 range is a single machine that can be used as a conventional machining centre with or without automation. This version is intended for the production of small series of parts or for prototyping. The K5-4 model, for 4-axis machining, is ideal for the production of plates and components for watch movements. A quick-change pallet makes it easy to replace the type of clamping present on the machine. The tool magazine has been optimised for easy access. It has 50 slots for ATC-E15 tool holders plus one for a three-dimensional measuring probe.

As an option, an additional digital axis provides back-up and gripping of parts that are sensitive to vibration or need to be separated from the stock.

The K5-5 model, for 5-axis machining, also offers great possibilities for machining watch parts, such as carrures, as well as jewellery or medical parts. Several clamping variants offer the possibility of working with pallets, clamps or directly in microbars of 160 mm in length and up to 10 mm. The C-axis can also be used for turning operations at up to 5,000 rpm thanks to the indexed and braked machining spindle that carries the chisel.

Other advantages of this new version include the solid frame for high stability and full exploitation of the K5 concept’s performance. Full integration of the water-water exchanger, coolant and chip management. The man-machine interface has also been completely redeveloped. Modern, intuitive and 100% tactile, it offers a clear vision of the machine’s status. A file editor allows the user to compare programs, edit them with an auto-completion function and consult the integrated documentation directly on the screen.

Flexible cells
The MCK flexible machining cell concept is also coming to an end with the production of prototypes. This solution will allow the production of larger batches of parts. The central automation manages the transfer of the workpiece to several K5-4 or K5-5 modules. It is also possible to integrate other third-party modules for part control or cleaning.
