The first electrolytic rhodium alloy in the world

February 2012

Umicore Electroplating has created a unique surface finish : Rhoduna® Alloy, the queen of noble surfaces. The colour just as white as that of pure rhodium, the surface more uniform and abrasion-resistant. At the same time, the "White Queen" is about 20 percent cheaper than pure rhodium layers.

Rhoduna® Alloy - the first pure white electrolytic rhodium alloy in the world.

Rhoduna® Alloy has been specifically developed for jewellery manufacturers. When the precious metal rhodium reached a record high of up to 10,000 US dollars per ounce in 2008, many jewellery manufacturers did not have a choice when plating their jewellery: Either pay the high price or switch to the less expensive but darker platinum finish. Therefore Umicore Electroplating has specifically researched and developed a rhodium alloy electrolyte with quality characteristics in every way equal to those of pure rhodium. Rhoduna® Alloy is the result. In wear tests, the alloy with a layer removal of 0.35 µm/1,000 strokes does even better than pure rhodium layers with 1.6 µm/1,000 strokes. Its superior throwing power additionally permits the uniform plating of complex part geometries.

From 8 to 15 March, Umicore Electroplating will present its pure white rhodium electrolyte at Baselworld 2012 in the "Hall of Innovations", 3rd basement (3.U), stand J34.
