Hard turning: Maximum use of cutting material

November 2014

The advantages of using high-performance cutting materials such as PcBN or PCD are clear. However, due to the high costs for these cutting materials, the users demand tool systems that make optimum use of the cutting edges without losing performance or stability of the process. Mapal successfully met this demand with an innovative indexing system indexable round inserts of PcBN for hard turning.

New indexing system from MAPAL for making optimum use of the cutting material PcBN.

The main innovation of the new indexing system is that the function of the defined turning of the round inserts is not implemented into the inserts but in the clamping system. Consisting of an indexing spindle and a spring bolt the new system allows that the indexable round inserts can be turned after the end of the tool life in a fool-proof manner. For this, the sturdy clamp is slightly loosened and the insert is turned to the next defined working position. The spring bolt then engages exactly in the indexing notch, and the system is securely clamped again. Changing times are thus short and easy, and the round inserts can be turned on the machine. The differing demands that roughing and finishing operations have on the wear of cutting edges are met by indexing systems with different step increments. The programme consists of indexable inserts for machining steel and cast iron materials.
