New clamping units for high pressure coolant

August 2013

To help facilitate the transfer of high pressure coolant (HPC), Sandvik Coromant has introduced a range of Coromant Capto® holders featuring a new clamping mechanism for use with standard CoroTurn® HP cutting units.

The new range of Coromant Capto® holders from Sandvik Coromant facilitates the transfer of high pressure coolant (HPC).

The combination of HPC and quick-change Coromant Capto clamping technology is set to provide customers with optimized machine utilization through reduced set-up and cycle time.

Swarf control Designed for static tool holders found on turning centres and vertical lathes, the innovation is set to benefit any manufacturers machining long-chipping materials such as heat-resistant super alloys, titanium, duplex stainless steel and high alloy steel. These materials are used commonly in industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, and other power generation segments.

Available in sizes C5, C6, C8 and C10, the Coromant Capto for HPC system not only aids swarf break-up, but can reduce tool change and set-up times considerably. This flexible, operator-friendly, plug-and-play tooling means there is no need to mount coolant tube sets.

Huge time savings Designed to accept CoroTurn HP and CoroTurn® SL units, the system is sealed off for capability of 200 bar (2,900 PSI) maximum coolant pressure. In one customer case study, the new solution with high pressure tool easily outperformed a standard coolant solution when machining an aero engine disc made from titanium (CMC 23.22). Here, speed, feed and depth of cut could all be increased to reduce cycle time by an impressive 42 per cent. Ultimately, the higher metal removal rate and improved chip control led to an annual saving of 1,500 production hours.

Coromant Capto® HP units are also available (as engineered solutions) as a manual clamping set in sizes C4, C5 and C6 for integrated build into turret, ram or housing.
