PowRgrip® brings power to the cutting edge at high speed

March 2010

With the transition of machines and tooling technology to carbide and fast-running tools, the machine parts manufacturer Deicken & Engels has equipped the whole factory with the powRgrip® tool clamping system from REGO-FIX. With this Swiss system it was possible to achieve the necessary minimal run out of the drilling and milling tools at the extreme forces that arise with high-speed machining. Now, all production employees swear by the innovative tool clamping system.

The demanding customers come from various sectors such as mechanical engineering, the automotive and petroleum industries, aerospace engineering, plant engineering, tool and die manufacturing or the food processing industry. As a consequence, each order is accompanied by new and unique challenges. The machining of diverse, difficult to process, tough materials such as steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, composits or special materials such as titanium, Hastelloy and forged stainless steel are therefore part of the daily tasks. The decision was made for the powRgrip® system from REGO-FIX. Andrew Engels, CEO of Deicken & Engels: "We are successfully utilizing the powRgrip® system in all CNC machines – for milling, turning, drilling, reaming and grinding in both roughing and finishing operations. With powRgrip®, we have upgraded our overall production concept to be state of the art. Now we have an efficient and competitive production system."

Obvious advantages For the manufacturer, the powRgrip® system provides all the advantages in fulfilling the high requirements for the various machining tasks. The tool run out therefore is kept to a maximum of 3 μm up to 3 x D. The length presetting has a positioning accuracy of 10 μm. The contact surfaces between the tool and collet, as well as, between the collet and toolholder dampen vibrations very good. Since there is absolutely no clamping mechanism, the full wall thickness is available to absorb radial forces. This leads to increased rigidity which, in turn, contributes to dampening of oscillations and vibrations. The time factor also plays an essential role, since the powRgrip® collet and cutting tool can be quickly and securely clamped into the toolholder within 10 seconds by means of a hydraulic clamping device. The toolholder can be immediately used in the CNC machine without requiring cooling. The clamping and unclamping processes thus function more quickly and easily than, for example, heat-shrink systems.

Easy to work with and efficient Henry Loewe: "All of our employees are enthusiastic about the problem-free, quick handling and very much enjoy working with the system. That’s unusual, since normally we hear negative feedback from the shop floor after procuring new equipment." Hermann Meyer of MMI Meyer + Münster, Sales Partner of REGO-FIX in Northwestern Germany: "Our experience shows that companies that were fully equipped with heat-shrinking systems have decided to adopt the Swiss powRgrip® clamping system, because it represents a huge step forward in precision, efficiency and tool life. The investment quickly pays for itself."
