Surface treatments by Tornos – some news

February 2011

Following the brief information published by the company on February 11 (see here), we were able to gather a few more… even if it is really early to speak about that.

Will this artist picture come true? A surface treatment machine close to the one that produces the parts?

The company bought the know-how and new patents of the system for about CHF 4 million. In fact Tornos bought the start-up company the inventors are launching to produce this new kind of machines as well as the patents.

Diversification To strengthen its position of solution provider, the company will propose surface treatments machines that could be installed close to the automatic lathes, making a kind of democratization of surface treatments. The machine will be able to chemical deburring, electroplating and anodizing.

A new approach We don’t have a lot of technical information about the new machine, it seems that the concept would allow Tornos to create nice machines to be put close to the production lathes… i.e. we can assume that the chemical would be completely enclosed and that the ergonomics would be different than the classical bunch of tanks. According to Tornos, this new way to treat parts could bring 10 to 15% productivity increase.

Product Launch? The start-up will be completely integrated into the Tornos Group… but it is too early to speak about a product launch. According to the company, Tornos will first finish the product development and adapt and test … the launch should take place between 2012 and 2013.

Then why speaking so early? As a public company Tornos must communicate on events that involve shares… and it is clearly the case here… even if it seems early for us, from the technical world.

Stay tuned, I’ll be back with more information as soon as possible.

Cheers py
