MAG presented world premiers for 5-axis machining and technology integration at EMO – with strong focus on energy Efficiency. The EMO is the place where the international machine tool industry unveils its new machine concepts and related innovations. In times of economic crisis, there is a high demand for solutions that help manufacturers reduce processing costs and total cost of ownership. Responding to that demand, MAG presented many productivity innovations in Milan, ranging from new machines to support concepts and tailored system solutions.

Same quality – new characteristics The MAG Hüller Hille NBH machine brand represents a long tradition of high-quality, robust and productive horizontal machining centers. Now this exceptional quality is available in a vertical main spindle. MAG introduced the first model from this new NBV series, an NBV 400, at EMO. Apart from its small foot print, one of the machine’s most striking characteristics is its modular design, which comprises the following main configurations:
- a fixed table for 3-axis machining
- a tilting table (A-axis) for 4-axis machining
- a rotary/tilting table (C-on A-axis) for simultaneous 5-axis milling
- and a rotary/tilting table (C-on A-axis) for 5-axis millturning, (1000 rpm).
The NBV can be configured for a wide range of machining requirements, and is ideal for die and mold, aerospace, medical, general machining or job shop sectors. Linear guideways on X, Y and Z axes provide ideal machine dynamics independent from the weight of the workpiece. This results in traverse rates up to 60 m / min and acceleration up to 6 m/s2 for high-performance machining and productivity. Innovative design work has eliminated hydraulics and hydraulic oil from the NBV 400. Tools are clamped by disc springs and unclamped pneumatically. This is just one of the features that lowers operating costs and energy consumption.
Energy efficiency The common denominator for all technologies in the MAG booth was energy efficiency. It is vital for manufacturers to save costs in the present economic situation – and energy savings go straight to the bottom line. It takes equipment that is state-of-the-art with regard to energy consumption. "Energy reduction is going to become more and more important in the future," says Martin Winterstein, responsible for Marketing at MAG. "We are one of the leading international machine tool companies supplying the automotive, truck and aerospace industries, as well as the heavy industrial, energy and general machining sectors. These key industries are going to face increasingly restrictive environmental regulations, and we will deliver solutions that help them to master these challenges.“
