According to the parts to produce, working with an Escomatic machine allows very important gains in productivity and autonomy. In small diameters, the D5 CNC Ultra machine had become the reference since 2011, but to improve productivity further, the manufacturer has doubled the positions of counter-operations and has just presented the D5 CNC Twin. Meeting with M. Schouller, the director of this very dynamic SME.
As reminder, the basic principle of the Escomatic lathes is to work from coil and to machine bars that are still, using a system of tool-holders rotating around the bar. Thus, strokes are minimal and productivity is at its best. And if the concept may seem exotic, this solution has been proven for over sixty years and more than 12’000 machines of this type have been delivered with a significant portion of them still in operation.
Shorter turning operation According to the kind of parts to produce, turning requires much less time than working in counter-operation. Thus, on a standard machine, once the part is finished in operation, this section of the machine must wait until the part is completed in counter-operation to pass its part and start the next one. M. Schouller explains: "On the basis of a D5 CNC Ultra, without changing the frame or all the systems required for turning, we transformed the machine by developing a system of double pick-off spindle or double counter-spindle". Thus the machine passes the parts alternately on the right and on the left to finish them. Three parts are machined simultaneously.
Cycle times divided by two Machining in counter-operation being by far the longest, parts realised by Esco show very significant productivity gains, according to the parts, productivity almost doubled. The director explains: ’With this evolution, we can bring substantial gains to our customers without any risk for them; all the technology is already proven and validated”.
