SurfaceTechnology GERMANY off to a successful start

June 2022

After the break due to COVID in 2020, the international trade fair for surface technology started yesterday in Stuttgart. Until June 23th, around 220 exhibitors from 18 countries will present solutions, products and services and show what the current trends are in the surface treatment industry. As an interdisciplinary technology, surface technology is at home in all industries. The spectrum of industrial sectors from which visitors come to SurfaceTechnology GERMANY is correspondingly broad.

"We are grateful for our exhibitors’ confidence in us to deliver a successful event. We all have over two challenging years behind us and are currently facing the fallout from Russia’s war in Ukraine. Nevertheless, we are sure that with SurfaceTechnology GERMANY 2022, we will once again focus not only on initiating new business, establishing contacts and developing markets, but also on opening up to new ideas and perspectives – and all this face to face again," says Hendrik Engelking, Global Director Surface Technology at Deutsche Messe AG.

"The surface technology sector of the engineering business is currently experiencing a good order situation," reports Dr. Martin Riester, Surface Technology Officer at VDMA. "This contrasts with significantly limited availability of essential components, such as electronics for plant control or seals."

Walter Zeschky, Chairman of the German Surface Technology Association (ZVO):
"After two consecutive years of losses, the electroplating and surface technology sector has recovered – despite rising procurement and energy costs, sourcing problems, regulatory requirements such as REACH, and staff shortages. However, with ongoing adverse conditions, the outlook is worrying."

With approximately 6,400 square meters occupied, we are below the level targeted in 2018, owing to the pandemic situation during the past two years and its impacts, but have unexpectedly exceeded the expectations for 2022. This year, the share of international exhibitors is 29 percent, which is an increase of 4% compared to the event in 2018. By far the largest group among them are the Italians, followed by exhibitors from Switzerland as well as from Turkey and Great Britain.

Know-how and innovations in the forum and on the joint stands
The central contact point for knowledge transfer and exchange of experience is the SurfaceTechnology GERMANY specialist forum with many exciting topics as well as numerous blue-chip speakers. On all three days of the exhibition, current topics and trends in surface technology will be discussed at 20-minute intervals. The forum program on the first day of the exhibition will kick off at noon with the Fraunhofer IPA presenting the Stuttgart Surface Technology Award, "The Surface 2022"; it will then continue with presentations on the topics of cleaning and pretreatment as well as energy and material efficiency. Wednesday morning will resume with the topics of application and use of treated surfaces, the Industry Internet of Things, new processes and the ten-minute product presentations. On Thursday, future topics will be highlighted as well as the topics REACH, physical surface treatment processes or machines/equipment/processes for surface treatment.

An important part of SurfaceTechnology GERMANY is the joint stand of the German Surface Technology Association (ZVO). Around 60 exhibitors will provide an insight into the diversity and performance of the electroplating and surface technology process chain, and present it as an interdisciplinary technology. In doing so, they will showcase their entire processes within the industrial value chain in an impressive way.

The showcase of the contract coating industry displays the diversity and performance of surface technology. At the special "Surface Technology Process Chain" area, customers from all production sectors of the industry can obtain information from the industry experts. The focus is on the presentation of various surface properties and coatings, which show the advantages in a wide variety of applications.

At this year’s information stand of the VDMA (German Engineering Federation) as well as in the forum of the international trade fair for surface technology, VDMA experts will provide information on important key topics and current developments in the industry. The focus here is on OPC UA and the topic of LABS compliance.

The spotlight of this year’s SurfaceTechnology GERMANY will be on climate and environment-friendly processes, resource efficiency and sustainability. The exhibition topics will include electroplating, abrasive blasting, nano- and microtechnology, thermal spraying, industrial plasma and laser surface technology, coating materials, surface treatment, environmental protection and supply technology, services, pretreatment, cleaning, and measuring, testing and analysis technology.

LASYS, CastForge and Automotives shows run in parallel
Exhibitors and visitors at SurfaceTechnology GERMANY will benefit from the events taking place at the same time: LASYS, international trade fair for laser materials processing in Hall 4; CastForge, trade fair for castings and forgings with machining in Halls 3 and 5; the Automotive Testing Expo in Halls 8 and 10; and the Autonomous Vehicle Technology Expo in Hall 6. Anyone who has a ticket for one of these events can attend all of them.
